Henry Grimmett PDF Print E-mail

When not on the production floor, you can often find Henry at the computer researching data for a new article or the properties of a new pigment. As the co-founder and general manager, Henry has the primary responsibility for developing the colors and introducing the continuous quality improvement program at Glass Alchemy.

Co-winner of the State of Oregon 2008 SBA Person of the Year Award and the Austin Family Business of the Year Award for 2008, Henry developed some of the most important colors in the borosilicate palette today, designed and built the first small scale drawing machines which are now used to produce rods in the 128, 104, 96 and 33 COEs and introduced a research program to study the colors and disseminate information on best use. Henry batches the color everyday upon arrival at the factory, after which he opens and responds to his e-mail. After various staff meetings, the day turns to testing new colors, writing articles or testing new crucible materials. Laced throughout the day are interactions with the staff covering topics from quality control to protecting our customer's online security.

Henry's interest in lampworking and color go back to the 1960's when he used to watch the glassblowers at Disneyland. Several of his friends apprenticed as glass blowers at Disneyland and still practice at the torch. Henry went to college and graduate school where he majored in the sciences. Henry returned to graduate school 10 years later to earn his masters in management. In the early 1970's he worked with groups teaching communication and leadership skills. He then entered the field of real estate and finance where he owned and operated 3 Red Carpet offices, then later opened a mortgage company. Soon after he obtained his securities dealers license so that he could offer real estate syndications. The nagging to be a lampworker had never diminished and the time was right for Henry to move to Oregon where his goal was to become a lampworker. In 1995 Henry moved and started taking lessons. In December 1999 Glass Alchemy, Ltd. was born. Fifteen separate safety manuals, dozens of standard operating procedures, hundreds of staff meetings and 8,000 experiments later, Glass Alchemy plays an essential role in the lives of artists and production shops.

In his non-business life, Henry enjoys working around the house, family activities and the martial arts. He still looks forward to splitting logs for the fireplace with a sledge and wedge and doing ground work in the gym on a hot summer evening, as well as sitting around and playing a round of Sorry or Propaganda with the kids. Watching the Daily show is also high on the list. Henry has recently taken up an old hobby that he enjoyed in the 50's and 60's - knot tying, which he hopes to integrate into his lampworking.
